[Kukmin Ilbo/Mar. 24] Open the eyes of mind after losing the eyesight

Kihyun Kim had it all. She was beautiful, she came from a loving family, and she was studying at the one of the most prestigious schools in Korea. She was well on her way to “success,” as she knew it. She stood proud with no one to envy. However, one day things would drastically change.

In 1994, during her freshman year in college, Kihyun underwent a malocclusion operation to align the imperfect location of her dental arches. However, due to medical malpractice of the surgeons, Kihyun unexpectedly lost her eyesight and became paralyzed. Yet through Kihyun’s persistent efforts to recover, along with her family’s loving care, Kihyun’s muscular senses were miraculously revived. Though she was able to move again, crushing still was that her vision was to stay the same, forever blind.

Enduring this crisis in her life devastated Kihyun, leading her to contemplate suicide. She felt neglected and lonely and believed that her visual impairment took away from her prime youth. Every time she fought with the harsh realities, she grew exhausted and depressed. However it was eventually during this time that her life started to change. As she returned to school after a four years leave, a streamline of hope and salvation healed her blindness. The healing was not in the sense that she regained her eyesight, but rather it was the healing of Kihyun’s heart and mind. She realized that she had been blinded by the truth to love and care for others. This transformational healing occurred as she received Jesus Christ as her Savior through an introductory class on Christianity taught at her school.

Since receiving Jesus Christ, she’s gained a new vision in life. A new set of eyes was instilled in her heart with a clear vision to reach out to those suffering from visual impairments. Remembering her painful past, she seeks to be a channel of blessing to the blind community in Asia. She also envisions sharing the love of Jesus Christ to those suffering in pain and despair.

In seeking to pursue this vision, Kihyun is currently studying Rehabilitation Counseling at Boston University. Her husband and son are standing hand-in-hand to help her prepare for her mission. Recently, in Kihyun’s desire to reach out to the disabled facing hardships, she published the book, Touching Happiness with Eyes of the Mind, (Publisher: Korea.Com) based on her life’s story. This book brings hope and comfort, not only to the individuals facing overwhelming difficulties from personal tragedies, but also to all who thirst for courage to live on. Her story of rehabilitation depicts a life overfilled with heavenly joy.

As Helen Keller once said, "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision." Keller’s admonishing words have resounded in the ears of Kihyun Kim, shaping her into an individual with an extraordinary vision. Although blind, she is driven to embrace the disheartened souls of the neglected and disabled in our society. She envisions bringing joy and peace to their lives through the message of Jesus Christ. Her life tells us a remarkable story of what it means to live with a hopeful purpose and accurate vision.
