September 4th, 1866. It was a moonless light. On the General Sherman was Reverend Robert Jermain Thomas. It was his second time visiting Korea as part of his mission to spread the gospel in Korea. During this era, Koreans were extremely hostile towards Christians and it was dangerous to spread the gospel. On September 5th, Korean officials set the General Sherman on fire and the shipmen on board jumped off the boat. Reverend Thomas also jumped with a bible in his arms. Many of the men who reached shore were killed by the spears of Korean officials. Reverend Thomas was dragged out of the waters by the guards and there, he bowed his head in prayer. Then, he gave the bible in his arms to the guard near him. The guard momentarily seemed surprised, but then killed Thomas who was only 27-years old at the time.

A Concert in Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Reverend Robert Jermain Thomas was held by the KWCTu on September 6th. Doctor Sang-Gyu Lee (Kosin University) explained how the 27-year old reverend lost his pregnant wife during his missionary work in China and came to Korea with the firm resolution that he would sacrifice his own life to share the Gospel.
