Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. – John 11, verses 43-44

Members of the Korean delegation of the KWCTU often call me “Lazarus.” They say that like Lazarus, Jesus saved me from death.

In October 2013, just a few months following the beautiful 39th world conference in Adelaide, I had a near-death experience.

I was just 19 years old when my lungs suddenly completely stopped working. If you see the photo above, you will notice that my lungs are completely white. By some twist of fate, one day, I was diagnosedwith Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. I was a university sophomore at the time and had caught a bad cold at the school festival. It just felt like I had the flu for a couple of days, until suddenly, one night, I couldn’t breathe at all. I was rushed to the intensive care unit at Seoul National University Hospital – the biggest hospital in South Korea. They told my family that I had come too late.

For unknown causes, my lungs had suddenly become infected with a virus and stopped functioning although 20% of my heart was beating. I was immediately medically-induced to sleep and put on ECMO or extracorporeal life support – a machine that provides cardiac and respiratory support to people whose heart and lungs are no longer able to sustain life. Every day, the doctors told my parents that I wouldn't be able to make it. Even if I did, I would have to get both a heart and lung transplant. Just getting a lung transplant only allows about 55% of patients to survive 5 years following the transplant. Yet my family and the people around me never stopped rejoicing and prayed continuously for my recovery.

On my fifth night on life support, Jesus came and healed me. With his bleeding hands, he touched me from head to toe and made me better.

By October 14th, the water in my lungs completely drained itself and my lungs started functioning again. The doctors say that they have no idea how I got sick or how I got better. Scientists say that lung regeneration is usually very minimal, especially if they are damaged to the extent that mine were.

However, in 2013, what science declared impossible, Jesus made possible for me.

I believe that the values instilled in me from the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union of faith, temperance, and belief in prayer saved my life. As a member of the Youth Temperance Council from high school, I abstained from alcohol consumption throughout my university years. Had I not practiced temperance and kept my organs clean and healthy… had I been drinking on the night of the school festival that I fell ill… and alcohol had a synergistic effect with my virus…I may not be standing here today. That is why I believe it’s extremely important for youth to participate in our organization.

Many youth believe that they are invincible. The concepts of sickness, death, heaven and hell are very far away to them.

They become preoccupied with worldly things – forgetting God in the excitement of youth.

But God alone has the right to be the sole leader of our life.

When I was in the intensive care unit, and I realized that I might be dying, I regretted the way I had lived my life. I had been so obsessed with and worried about worldly things – good grades, money, clothes, make-up… Absolutely none of that mattered in the face of death. And no one could help me but God. Nothing mattered except God. And amidst all that conflict, I was oddly reassured. Because I believed that Jesus Christ is Savior. And even if I died, I would be able to go to heaven – and have a beautiful afterlife.

Upon getting miraculously better, I have decided to dedicate my entire life to God and the World Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. Originally, I was a student of politics – but with the guidance of prayer, I changed my graduate studies major to Preventative Medicine. I wish to research Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and alcohol’s effect on the human body in depth and give amazing lectures to you like the keynote speakers here. I want to represent the WWCTU at the World Health Organization…and United Nations and promote complete temperance to millions of people around the world.

I’d like to end my talk today with a final bible verse.

Do not be drunk with Wine because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you.

God bless you all. Thank you.
